  • Responsibilities

    SUMMARY

    Test Operations Technicians will perform engineering evaluation, design validation and product or process verification testing on products or components received from internal or external customers under the guidance and direction of the Lab Manager.

     

    Test Equipment Technicians perform tasks involving the build, maintenance, modification and repair of electrical and mechanical test equipment and test systems.

     

    Successful candidates must understand safety practices, machine operation and repair, metallurgy, electricity, hydraulics, pneumatics, blueprint reading, motor and logic controls, transformers, electrical codes and how to interpret schematics.  At a Technician II level the Technician has experience with at least one product line and is able to assist others with set-ups and test monitoring.  The Technician II will be learning additional product lines. They will also be able to actively assist with trouble-shooting and are able to work with limited supervision.

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

     

    • Read and interpret drawings, charts, schematics and STRATTEC, customer or industry specifications.
    • Assist with the installation of equipment, such as FDM, 3D Printing, instrumentation, test equipment, test equipment spare parts, electrical components, etc… to ensure proper interface, decrease test downtown and increase test efficiency.
    • Assist in the maintenance of test equipment to maintain good operational condition by performing routine maintenance or making minor repairs or adjustments.  Participate in 5S activities.
    • Assist with troubleshooting efforts for perceived or validated nonconforming product.
    • Assist other technicians in completing assigned tasks.
    • Train Engineering Co-Op students to create rapid prototype components or assemblies using FDM & 3D Printing tools.  
    • Continue ongoing training, education, and seminars to increase technical knowledge and understanding of tests, test equipment, computer, communication and organizational skills.
    • Travel as necessary to support external testing activities and training.
    • Carry out tasks as assigned by Lab Manager.

     

    Test Operations Technician

     

    • Responsible for performing manual or automated testing in accordance with the received test request and test plan (DVP&R, ADVP&R, GMRP-1829) per STRATTEC, customer, and industry methods and specifications
    • Generate detailed and accurate test reports, using photos, videos, spreadsheets, outside test reports, or other tools.
    • Verbally report test project progress to lab manager and in-writing to test project requestor as required.
    • Set up FDM, 3D Printers and test equipment in accordance with STRATTEC or customer specifications, standards, or test procedures.  Test equipment includes mechanical and electrical, manual and automated.
    • Monitor computer-controlled FDM, 3D Printers and test equipment, according to written or verbal instructions which includes after-hour and weekend support.
    • May use CAD to design required fixtures.
    • Create lab operations method sheets
    • Recommend tests or testing methods in accordance with designs, customer requirements, or industry standards to ensure test validity.
    • Assists in the training of new Engineering Technicians, Engineering Co-Op students and interns on the use of FDM, 3D Printers, test equipment, test methods and reporting of test results.
    • Write purchase requisitions and/or work orders for outside testing, equipment maintenance repairs, test fixtures and general lab items, follow up on purchase/work orders to keep them on time and assure work is completed as requested

     

    Test Equipment Technician

    • Read and interpret blueprints and schematics to build test equipment and fixtures
    • Operate basic machine tools (Drill Press, mill, lathe, shear….), power tools, hand tools.
    • Create and modify CAD generated models, detail component drawings, wiring schematics and assembly drawings. PTC Creo preferred.
    • Contribute to equipment user guides, design manuals and design standards.

     

     

    Qualifications

     

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Computer literacy, uses Microsoft Office Suite products to prepare reports and updates
    • Ability to handle and organize multiple test projects, data, paperwork and files
    • Ability to work with hand tools and basic machines to alter or create parts;  must have mechanical aptitude to work with tools in tearing down product assemblies
    • Perform basic calculations to analyze designs and solve problems
    • Background in practical electronics, electronic test equipment and troubleshooting
    • Troubleshoot to determine nature or cause of defects or malfunctions with tested samples, test equipment or test setup
    • Self-sufficient / self-motivated and able to work effectively with minimal supervision
    • Team player

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

     

    T2/Experienced

    One year certificate from college or technical school; with one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Lead Technician for at least one product category and experience with more than one.

     

    LANGUAGE SKILLS

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to document problem solving efforts and contribute to problem solving reports.

     

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

    Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

     

    REASONING ABILITY

    Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.  Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases.  Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

     

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

    While certificates and licenses are not required for entry-level positions, they are recognized and recommended as on-going education and experience.

    • Manufacturing Skills Standards Council (MSSC) Certified Production Technician (CPT)
    • NI LabVIEW Associate Developer, Developer, Architect
    • ACT National Career Readiness Certificate
